This post will introduce sightseeing spots first and then recommend day trip itinerary at the end.
Please take into consideration that it’s pretty hot in the Summer. Outdoor activities may not be as enjoyable as they appear in the Summer.
Note that some of the pictures are collected from the internet.
This recommendation is biased toward my experience and personal likings.
Feel free to extend your stay should you find these standard tourist attractions not enough :)
More in depth traveling recommendation is available upon request/in guide book at your local bookstores.

Inside Taipei
Historical and cultural

National Palace Museum (故宮博物院) - http://www.npm.gov.tw/en/
If you are interested in learning a bit about Chinese culture & history and seeing the gems of the 3000 years-old civilization, you won’t find anywhere better than this place, not even in China.
2-3 hours for quick tour; 4-6 hours if you are Chinese culture mania. Audio guide in most language available.
Location: Metro to Shilin station (Red line) and take a 10 minutes bus (frequent)

Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall (中正紀念堂) - http://www.cksmh.gov.tw/eng/index.php
Chiang Kai-Shek was one of the pass presidents of the Republic of China (this is the official name of Taiwan btw). A memorial hall was commissioned in his name during the time when nation leaders were greatly admired. I personally prefer seeing the place at night. The National Theatre and the National Concert Hall are just beside the memorial hall and are hotspots as well.
1 hours if you just want to see the 3 big buildings and take pictures. An evening if you arrange to see a play or concert. Ticket booking available here http://www.ntch.edu.tw/front/index
If it doesn’t work for foreigners, contact me in advance.
Location: Metro to Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall station (Red line)

Lungshan Temple (龍山寺)
Experience the Taiwanese worshiping culture
30 minutes if photo shooting only; 1 hours if you want to join the worship
Location: Metro to Lungshan Temple station (Blue line)
